In fact, why bother having air traffic controllers as they just sit on their asses all day telling planes when to land and take off. If someone is smart enough to be a jet pilot, then they should know when to land or take off without being told by someone sitting in a control tower at some airport. Hell, didn't that pilot land that plane in the Hudson River and he didn't need permission to land or an air traffic controller to tell him what runway to land on
The above I wrote tongue in cheek in January. Yesterday, an American Airlines jet landed in Washington, D.C. without contact with the tower and an air traffic controller. Who says we are not downsizing the Federal Government? If they can land in D.C. without an air traffic controller, they can land anywhere without air traffic controllers. We need to find ways to do more with less, and air traffic controllers can be just the beginning.

Oh my God. Not that air traffic controllers are not a neurotic bunch, and who knows what's going on in their minds, but I really feel safer thinking someone's watching out for private planes, air traffic, etc. I know pilots fall asleep sometimes. The human factor is HUGE.
And we don't need Highway Patrol and heck, what do we need those stupid lines in the street for?
Oh, I made a minor error, there were 2 planes that landed without contact with the tower! See, we already are doing more with less!
Yes Lou, there are so many ways we can downsize government. Just think, the Native Americans didn't have a Federal Government and they got along just fine. As Ronald Reagan said, " government is the problem, it is not the solution. Take down all the road signs, speed limit signs and traffic lights too. See how easy it is to save money!
The market can solve the problem. Customers vote with their feet. Those who have suffered a plane crash seldom ever buy from that offending airline again. The market means that crashing airlines will loose passengers and those that stay aloft will gain market share, but of course I'm kidding.
