Just got back from California and I need a day or two to adjust back. I also need to get to work on other business matters too. The economy is coming back. Unfortunately, the same bad things are in line to happen again. More about that later.
What I find discouraging about America....... As I was growing-up, I have always looked to successful individuals, both in business and in government, as someone that could provide answers and help guide others. Now, in later life, I find that many of these individuals have no answers and in fact, many of these people were only interested in self-success, no matter who was hurt in the process. It seems many have attained positions by luck or by who they know. I believe what we are witnessing in the health care debate today reflects these ideas. Many of our so called "leaders" don't want everyone to have equal health care. It seems to me if a certian segmant of the population is deprived of basic health care, this will be a huge detrimental effect on our entire society.
With your background, let me know your thoughts on this idea....
There was some talk a while back but I guess it has been put under the rug...
If the government issued bonds only available for retirement accounts, totally tax-free, current issuance of 5% and indexed for inflation for newly issued bonds.
Wouldn't this be a god-sin for the safety portion of your investments. The stock market has returned 0% over the last 10-15 yrs. This would also help keep bonds out of the hands of foriegn countries.
Winslow, I can tell by the way you write that you are a good soul. Nations need good souls, but unfortunately, the people that lead nations, called leaders, are themselves not good souls, there are exceptions. Yes, everyone should receive good quality health care. Especially those who wind up fighting for us in our armed services, as it would make good sense to give our children of every economic class the benefit of quality health care. Where are our fighting people going to come from? How many in Congress have a son or daughter in the armed services? I know Joe Biden has a son on active duty, but how common is that? Yes Winslow, I agree with everything you wrote about health care. To his credit, the junior senator from Ohio, Sherrod Brown, has not signed his health care card for a Senator. Why? Because he is waiting for all citizens to get what he is being offered. That is a class act.
Winslow, your comment about Government bonds I could write a book about. Let me just say this. The financial industry would cry foul if the US Treasury gave the individual investor a good investment opportunity for long term savings for their retirement. That is my opinion of course. How would any private sector industry feel if the government offered a better product? The idea for retirement bonds is very good and, you know, some day we may have to just do that out of necessity.
What if you and I and another million people marched on Washington and asked our government for such a retirement bond. I am too old for it to do me any good, but there are a lot people out there that deserve that option and opportunity to save for their retirement. How do you think Fidelity Investments would feel about that if they could not broker the transaction?
Wecome back. When you get a chance try to take a look at this. It's about borrowing against the money in a depressed country, selling this currency to buy assets in another location to make a profit. Sounds reasonable until you realize that we are the bank and it will depress out currency value even further....move over Japan. We could replace them as the example of what happens when a countries bank puts too much money out and lowers the loan rate too far down.
Retired after working with investment securities and portfolios for over 35 years. My interest in politics, history and the economy will provide a jump off for moneythoughts. From time to time I will post pieces of my artwork. I call my artwork political satire and I welcome your comments. I am available to speak or write economic commentary for money managers, brokerage firms or anyone else that thinks my ideas offer something worth while.
